SS11 TEST: World War One on Wednesday, February 18

A reminder to my Socials 11 students that your unit test on World War One will be on Wednesday, February 18 and will contain a mix of multiple choice, definition, short answer and 1 multi paragraph response questions, totally approximately 50 marks.

Remember our analogy in class regarding active studying . . . you can't just get fit by going to the gym and looking at the equipment - you actually have to pick it up and start using it to make a difference. Studying is no different . . . the brain is a muscle and it needs a work out during studying to make any difference. Just looking at the textbook or your notebook is usually not enough for most learners. Try making your own study cards or study notes, create neumonics or catch phrases to help you remember key ideas or concepts, use a "study buddy" and "read alouds" to review material or even try "surfing the net" for some good websites that are interesting and engaging to you. English 9 Writer's Workshop Portfolio #2 due February 12, 2015

An important reminder to my English 9's that your Writer's Workshop Portfolio #2 (1 descriptive paragraph, 1 theme piece related to The Pigman, 1 genre and topic of your choice) is due on Thursday, February 12. Portfolios submitted after this date may not be assessed in time to meet McMath's Term 2 report card deadline. Please endeavour to submit your work on time. Thank you

Also, remember to submit the drafts, revisions, editing response sheets (2 different editors for all 3 pieces= 6 editors total), and final copies (typed, double spaced).

Emerging technology played a major role in the evolution of warfare during World War One. One of the Canadian developed technologies used during combat was the "Ross Rifle".

Below is a link to an article that points out many of the "technical difficulties" faced by soldiers using the Ross Rifle during trench warfare (heavy at 9 pounds, mis-firing, jamming). . . and their solution to take British designed and made Lee Enfields off dead soldiers in no man's land.
